Local building contractor celebrates 60 years

One of the longest established building contractors in Jersey, AC Mauger Construction, is celebrating its 60th anniversary year in style.

Established in 1947, AC Mauger Construction is now part of the Style Group of companies which includes AC Mauger Special Projects, Style Homes, Style Windows, Style Office, Style Shopfitting and Style Estates in the UK.

In 1947 Mr A C Mauger and Mr F Treussard established their small firm, which operated from the back yard of Sunwin, St Peter; Mr Mauger’s residence. A joinery shop was built in the back yard, employing five or six joiners, which remained in operation until the firm moved to new premises in Rue Fondon in the 70’s.

Mauger & Treussard employed approximately 20 men, all direct employees of varying trades, carrying out extensions of houses, new houses, joinery and decoration works.  The company was reformed in 1962, and became A C Mauger & Son Ltd, with founder members Mr A C Mauger and Mr Eric Mauger.

AC Mauger has been at the forefront of construction in the island for many years and was the first building company in Jersey to have its own excavator and skip lorry.  It was also the first company to have radio controlled lorries and vans.

The first project undertaken by the newly formed company was at Randall’s Brewery between 1964-65, to construct a new bottling hall.  The firm rapidly grew and took on even larger contracts, including The Jersey Pottery, Ann Street flats, Social Security’s new headquarters, Clos du Rivage Gorey, Links Court flats and in 1982 Cyril Le Marquand House.

In 1982, The Style Group acquired AC Mauger and the growth of the company continued.  Today the company has undertaken many high profile projects which recently included 15-17 Esplanade, Magnolia Apartments, The Boathouse Restaurant, Le Squez, Le Coie, Genesis at Red Houses (including the supermarket and apartments) and La Folie.

To celebrate this milestone, AC Mauger is involved in several community events throughout 2007.  The first of which is the launch of their safety campaign, Keep Safe.  Stay off Sites.  This campaign, aimed at educating youngsters to the dangers of building sites, launched at Haute Vallee school earlier in the year.  This will culminate in the production of a site board, designed by one of the students, which will then be displayed on the neighbouring Mont A’l Abbe school construction site.  The second initiative of 2007 is the sponsorship of a new climbing wall in First Tower Park.

Although these two projects are now well underway, AC Mauger hope to become involved in yet more community events throughout 2007.

David Cobbett, Managing Director, AC Mauger Construction, said: “We are delighted to be celebrating 60 years and do to so with projects in the community puts the icing on the cake.  We have had a very successful 60 years and I want to thank our committed staff, both current and retired, who have helped AC Mauger to become the company it is now proud to be.”
