Style Office offers Jersey’s first furniture recycling


Local office furniture specialists, Style Office, are to offer clients the opportunity to recycle all unwanted office furniture.

Style Office has partnered with UK furniture recycling company, Green-works, to offer all clients the opportunity to send their unwanted furniture to the UK for recycling, a service previously unavailable in the Channel Islands.

Calculations show that the average office worker ‘owns’ approximately 0.25 tonnes of office furniture including desk, chair, storage and a share of meeting room and reception furniture. If this were to be disposed of in landfill, approximately 375kg of carbon would be released into the atmosphere. If the office furniture from an office of 100 workers were to be recycled, then approximately 37.5 tonnes of “locked in” carbon emissions could be saved.

Style Office will offer their customers the option of recycling unwanted furniture, which traditionally, is dumped or incinerated. The scheme is the first of its kind in Jersey and forms part of Style Office’s policy of promoting environmentally friendly practices. The company already supplies office furniture made from recycled or recyclable materials.

In addition to the environmental benefits of this scheme, Style Office is committed to helping the local community. For every container of furniture shipped to Green-works Style Office will donate £250 to Jersey Hospice.

Green-works is a not for profit organisation which processes, reuses and recycles unwanted office furniture at their depots in London and around the country. Green-works accepts all office furniture, in any condition, including chairs, notice boards, desks, safes, pictures, fire extinguishers, lamps, heaters and even waste bins. The company guarantees that nothing ends up in landfill; what cannot be reused is recycled. Re usable furniture is refurbished or remanufactured and sold at very low rates to charities, schools, community groups and hospitals. In addition, Green-works provides employment and training opportunities for disadvantaged groups as well as creating jobs in deprived areas.

This scheme is also being supported by Transport and Technical Services.

“Over 60% of the waste we deal with is from trade premises so this project is really welcome in our drive to reduce waste and recycle more. With a thriving economy we see an awful lot of perfectly good office furniture going to waste – who better than the supplier of your new equipment to ensure your old kit is re-used or recycled.”
